Berkley bill designates Gold Butte a national conservation area
WASHINGTON -- Rep. Shelley Berkley, D-Nev., introduced a bill in Congress this afternoon to designate more federally protected land in Clark County.
The bill would create a new National Conservation Area at Gold Butte, 65 miles northeast of Las Vegas. Berkley said the designation would protect intriguing rock formations and petroglyphs, and historic remains of old mining towns.
Berkley likened the area to Sloan Canyon and Red Rock Canyon, other parts of the county that have been designated as conservation areas.
She said in a statement the bill "would still permit a full range of activities, including hiking, horseback riding and the use of off-road vehicles in designated areas."
