Biden to hold Tuesday rally at Culinary training site

Vice President Joe Biden will rally President Barack Obama's supporters on Tuesday at a Culinary union training facility in Las Vegas as Democrats use labor forces to get out the vote ahead of the Nov. 6 election.

Doors will open at 9:30 a.m. for Biden's speech at the Events Center at the Culinary Academy of Las Vegas. His address will come four days before early voting starts in Nevada on Oct. 20.

The Culinary union and other labor organizations put members on the streets in the final months of election years to help the Democratic Party contact voters and get them to the polls and form a loyal army that has given the party an edge in Nevada over the Republican Party.

The labor forces also help boost Hispanic turnout because many of the union members come from the Latino community, which is about 26 percent of the state population.

Free tickets will be available for the Biden event starting today at 10 a.m., the Obama campaign said. They will be distributed on a first-come, first-served basis at these locations:

■ The Obama campaign office at 3230 East Charleston Blvd. Suite 111 in Las Vegas.

■ The Culinary union Local 226 at 1630 S. Commerce St., in Las Vegas.

■ The Nevada Partners Culinary Training Academy, 710 W. Lake Mead Blvd., in Las Vegas.

■ The AFL-CIO office at 1891 Whitney Mesa Drive in Henderson.

Biden also is scheduled to campaign Monday in Reno, holding a rally at noon at the Reno Ballroom.

Nevada is a battleground state that could determine whether Obama wins a second term or whether GOP challenger Mitt Romney replaces him in the White House. Recent polls in the Silver State show the contest is in a dead heat. The two men will debate for a second time on Tuesday when Biden is here.

Biden and Romney's vice presidential running mate, U.S. Rep. Paul Ryan, R-Wis., debated Thursday night in their only face-off before the election.
