City of Las Vegas caters to residents 50 years and older

The city of Las Vegas active adult and senior centers offer exercise, fitness, craft, arts, dance, music and computer classes; cards; games; discussion and social groups; luncheons; sports; and special events Monday through Friday to residents age 50 and better. A listing of classes and activities is published in the Beyond the Neon Leisure Guide, available in the centers and online at www.lasvegasnevada.gov/Find/recreation.htm. All activities are subject to change.

Most activities require $2 annual membership to city of Las Vegas Senior Citizen Programs, available at all senior and active adult centers. Centers will be closed for holidays May 30 and July 4.

n Knitting Group, Wednesdays, 9 a.m. Cost: free with annual membership. Centennial Hills Active Adult Center, 6601 N. Buffalo Drive, 229-1702.

n Line Dancing, Thursdays, 2-4 p.m., and Fridays, 10 a.m. to noon. Cost: Free with membership. Centennial Hills Active Adult Center, 6601 N. Buffalo Drive, 229-1702.

n Ballroom Dances, 3-5:30 p.m. Tuesdays and 2-4 p.m. Fridays,. Fee: $4 each day; must be current member in city of Las Vegas Senior Programs ($2 per year). Las Vegas Senior Center, 451 E. Bonanza Road, 229-6454. Ballroom Dance Socials are held every Tuesday night and Friday afternoon with live music by Boyd Coulter and his band.

n Award-winning Community Garden, Doolittle Senior Center, 1930 N. J St., 229-6125. Join our work crew and reap the benefits of fresh vegetables, fruits and flowers. The garden has 40 raised gardening beds and is located in the 1200 block of Blankenship Avenue. Master Gardner Don Fabbi meets with volunteer gardeners on Wednesdays at 9 a.m.

n Weekly Fitness Classes. Cost: $15 per month. Centennial Hills Active Adult Center, 6601 N. Buffalo Drive, 229-1702. Classes include yoga, water and arthritis aerobics, cardio dance, dynamic fitness, tai chi, plus many others. Call 229-1702 for a complete listing. Through a partnership with the Centennial Hills YMCA, center members have limited time free usage of the cardio/weight room and the indoor lap pool.

The following senior programs are being offered by the city of North Las Vegas Neighborhood Recreation Center, 1638 N. Bruce St., North Las Vegas. All classes are drop-in and participants must be 55 years of age or older. Seniors are required to be a member of the Senior Program. A yearly fee of $3 is charged.

All classes are free, unless otherwise noted. Comfortable clothing and closed-toe shoes with rubber soles are recommended. For flamenco and folklorico dance, please wear hard-soled shoes. For more information, call 633-1492.

The following senior trips are being offered by the North Las Vegas Neighborhood Recreation Center, 1638 N. Bruce St. and the Silver Mesa Recreation Center, 4025 Allen Lane, both in North Las Vegas. Seniors are required to be a member of the Senior Program to participate. A yearly fee of $3 is charged.

n Super Summer Theater -- Enjoy the Broadway show " Annie" under the stars at Spring Mountain Ranch State Park. Pack a picnic dinner or buy dinner at the snack bar. You can also rent a lawn chair or bring your own. Fee $18. June 9 --
4:15 pickup, 11:30 p.m. drop-off, Neighborhood Recreation Center; 4:45 p.m. pickup, 11 p.m. drop-off, Silver Mesa Recreation Center.

n Picnic at Mount Charleston -- The Lee Canyon picnic area, nestled amongst Alpine trees, will be the location for this summer outing. Fee $10. June 16 -- 9 a.m. pickup, 3 p.m. drop-off, Neighborhood Recreation Center; 9:30 a.m. pickup,
2:30 p.m. drop-off, Silver Mesa Recreation Center.

n Shark Reef Aquarium at Mandalay Bay Hotel -- Spend the morning with more than 2,000 species in 1.6 million gallons of seawater. You'll walk through two tunnel exhibits for a "diver's view" of the underwater world. You can also visit the Touch Pool where you can touch sharks, sting rays or horseshoe crabs. Lunch on your own. Fee $15. Aug. 3 -- 9 a.m. pickup, 2:30 p.m. drop-off, Silver Mesa Recreation Center; 9:30 a.m. pickup, 2 p.m. drop-off, Neighborhood Recreation Center.
