City offers variety of sports, recreational activities, events

The city of Las Vegas offers a number of recreational, adaptive recreational activities and sports special events throughout the summer. All activities are subject to change.

Most activities require advance registration. City centers will be closed for the July 4 holiday.
n Fiesta Day! (all ages); Saturday, noon to 5 p.m.; fee: $3 per person; food and beverages priced separately; Carlos L. Martinez and Darrio J. Hall Family Pool at Freedom Park, 889 N. Pecos Road, 229-1755. Bring the family to enjoy Latin music, swimming, food and beverages. Receive information about swim lessons, youth swim teams and party rentals.
n Summertime Indoor Volleyball B/C Division League (coed ages 18+); Wednesdays, 6 p.m., June 1-July 13; fee: $100 per team; Dula Gymnasium, 441 E. Bonanza Road, 229-6307. Enjoy six weeks of competition, two games per night, with a concluding tournament game. USA Volleyball rules apply.
n Free Ward 1 Summer Splash (all ages); June 3, at 6 p.m.; Bill & Lillie Heinrich YMCA Pool, 4141 Meadows Lane. Join Councilwoman Lois Tarkanian for a free and fun pool event. Call 229-6405 for more information.

n Free Ward 6 Fishing Derby and Pancake Breakfast (all ages); June 11; 7-10 a.m. breakfast; fishing is free all day, pancake breakfast is $5; Floyd Lamb Park at Tule Springs, 9200 Tule Springs Road, 229-8100. n Dash and Splash; June 11, July 9 and Aug. 13; arrive at 7:30 a.m.; race begins at 8 a.m.; fee: $15 preregistration, $20 on event day; Pavilion Center Pool, 101 S. Pavilion Center Drive, 229-1488. Beginning at Pavilion Center Pool with a 1.5 mile run that winds through a nearby park, then concludes with a 300-meter swim at the pool. There is no age limit, but participants must be able to swim 100 meters successfully.
n School's Out Summer Splash Party (all ages); June 11, noon to 6 p.m.; daily fee of $1 for ages 4-17, $2 for ages 18-49, $1.50 for ages 50+, free for ages 0-3; Pavilion Center Pool, 101 S. Pavilion Center Drive, 229-1488. Enjoy swimming, games, dancing, treats, prizes, music and all the splash toys in the pool.
n Dear Ol' Dad's Day (all ages); June 12, noon to 6 p.m.; daily fee of $1 for ages 4-17, $2 for ages 18-49, $1.50 for ages 50+, free for ages 0-3 and fathers; Municipal Pool, 431 E. Bonanza Road, 229-6309; Pavilion Center Pool, 101 S. Pavilion Center Drive, 229-1488; Carlos L. Martinez and Darrio J. Hall Family Pool at Freedom Park, 889 N. Pecos Road, 229-1755. Dad receives free admission to recreation swim when accompanied by his child.
n Learn to Swim Lessons (ages 18 months-adult); lessons begin the week of June 13 and are available at all open pools throughout the summer; fee: $25 for group classes, $100 for six 45-minute private lessons, $50 for six $45-minute semi-private lessons. n Summer Water Sports Teams (ages 7-17); fee: $25 for entire summer program, beginning the week of June 13. Participate in novice competitive swimming, diving, synchronized swimming or water polo at any city of Las Vegas pool. Call 229-6309 for more information and to register.
n Dive In Movie Night! (all ages); June 17, July 8, Aug. 5, 6-8 p.m.; fee: $3 per person; Pavilion Center Pool, 101 S. Pavilion Center Drive, 229-1488. Take a dip in the pool, lounge on a raft, or lounge in a deck chair while watching a movie on the big screen. Light refreshments will be provided. All pool rules apply. Family movie to be determined.
n Yankee Doodle at the Pool (all ages); July 1, noon to 5 p.m.; daily fee of $1 for ages 4-17, $2 for ages 18-49, $1.50 for ages 50+, free for ages 0-3. Participate in many water games and activities as we celebrate our independence in all city pools.
n Another Hot Tropical Night (all ages); Saturday, July 9, 6-9 p.m.; fee: $3 per person; Pavilion Center Pool, 101 S. Pavilion Center Drive, 229-1488. It's an annual tropical adventure -- dancing, swimming, games and a DJ playing music.
n Southern Nevada Lifeguard Games (all ages); July 16, 6-9 p.m.; free admission; Pavilion Center Pool, 101 S. Pavilion Center Drive, 229-1488. Enjoy the show as lifeguards compete from across the valley.
n All-City Synchronized Swimming Show (all ages); Aug. 4, 7-9 p.m.; free admission; Baker Pool, 1100 E. St. Louis Ave., 229-1532. With the Old Wild West theme, this year's annual event will be a yee-haw good time.
n Beach Party Splash (all ages); Aug. 14, noon to 6 p.m.; fee: $3 per person; Municipal Pool, 431 E. Bonanza Road, 229-6309. Enjoy swimming, games, dancing, treats, prizes, a DJ playing your favorite music and all the splash toys in the pool.
n Free Ward 6 Back-to-School Fair and Movie in the Park (all ages); Aug. 5, 6:30-

Adaptive Recreation
n Summer Dance; June 17, 6-9 p.m.; fee: $10; tickets must be purchased by June 10; Centennial Hills Active Adult Center, 6601 N. Buffalo Drive, 229-1702. Come out and kick up your heels at the first Summer Bash Dance. Bring your friends and join us for a night of dancing, music and food. RSVP by June 10 to 229-5177.
n New A.G.E. (ages 22+); Monday-Friday, 1:30-5:30 p.m., through June 8, closed holidays and Opportunity Village staff development days; fee: one to three days $21, four days $28, five days $35; Centennial Hills Active Adult Center, 6601 N. Buffalo Drive, 229-1702. New A.G.E. "after-work" recreation program for adults with developmental disabilities. The program offers a variety of activities and special events that promote individuality, self-esteem and independence. Call 229-5177 for registration packet and information.
n Leisure Connection (ages 22+). Leisure Connection is a social group for adults with developmental disabilities. Community outings are planned each month to assist high-functioning adults with social skills and independence in the community. Activities include bowling, movies, lunch/dinner outings, sports events and leisure education classes. Call 229-5177 to be placed on the activity schedule mailing list.
n Lorenzi Adaptive Recreation Center Summer Program (ages 7-21); Monday-Friday, 7:30 a.m. to 6 p.m., beginning June 13. Closed July 4; fee: $75 per week; East Las Vegas Community/Senior Center, 250 N. Eastern Ave., 229-1515. The Lorenzi Adaptive Recreation Center provides recreational programming for youth of all abilities. Participants will enjoy a new recreation experience every week, community outings, sports, games, arts and crafts, swimming and movies. n Paralympic Sports Club Las Vegas (ages 5-adult). Paralympic Sports Club Las Vegas, in conjunction with the Clark County School District, is a program designed for children and adults with physical disabilities that offers sports training and competitions throughout Southern Nevada.
