Coroner IDs driver who died when police pursuit ends in five-car crash
A man who died after colliding with several cars while being pursued by police in the northeast valley Wednesday night was identified by the Clark County coroner's office as Ivan Carrillo, 26, of North Las Vegas.
Las Vegas police said Carrillo was involved in a five-car crash that included an on-duty patrol car near Lone Mountain Road and Lamb Boulevard at 10:19 p.m.
Although police initially said that Carrillo crashed into the patrol car, a Thursday press release was unclear about which vehicle struck the other first. Additional details were unavailable Thursday night.
Police initially spotted Carrillo at 10:09 p.m. at Lamb Boulevard and Carey Avenue.
A caller said a small black vehicle that police identified as a Honda Civic, was driving slowly and weaving between travel lanes. The caller reported to police the driver might have been impaired.
A motorcycle officer tried to stop the Civic, police said. Carrillo refused to stop and drove slowly until he reached Nellis Boulevard, where he sped off.
The motorcycle officer requested additional marked patrol cars to assist with the stop. The motorcycle officer then stopped pursuing the Civic.
The patrol cars attempted to stop Carrillo, police said, but he continued north on Nellis. A short pursuit ensued before a police helicopter began trailing the Civic, police said.
At that point, the patrol cars turned off their lights and sirens but continued to follow Carrillo.
The vehicle continued driving erratically, police said.
"When it reached the intersection of Lamb Boulevard and Lone Mountain Road, contact was made between one of the Metro patrol vehicles, which had been following the suspect, and the Honda," police said in a statement.
Police added Carrillo's car then crossed from the northbound travel lanes of Lamb into the southbound travel lanes, where it collided with a Ford Contour and a Dodge Ram 1500. The Dodge Ram then struck a Pontiac Grand Prix.
Carrillo was taken to the University Medical Center where he was pronounced dead.
Andrea Hottel, a 31-year-old Las Vegan, sustained moderate injuries in the collision.
Police have not released the name of officer who was driving the patrol car involved in the crash. The police investigation is ongoing.
