County officials learn budget deficit will be $114 million

Clark County faces an estimated $114 million deficit in its general fund for the coming year, and the shortfall could grow.

County commissioners heard the gloomy financial reports today along with enough cost-cutting measures to plug $70 million of the budget holes in the general fund.

The recommended savings include:

-Keep a hard hiring freeze in place and 400 jobs vacant for $25.6 million.

-Delay opening the low-level offender jail for $16 million. That figure was higher than an earlier estimate of $13 million.

-Scuttle the redevelopment program for $5.5 million.

-Reduce pay raises for union employees for $9.6 million.

-Freeze 200 job openings at University Medical Center for about $8.5 million.

-Forgo pay raises for management for $2.1 million and non-union employees for $846,000.
