Damselfly soaring closer to recognition

CARSON CITY -- The vivid dancer damselfly quickly won approval Monday from the Assembly Government Affairs Committee as it continues on its flight to become Nevada's state insect.

The blue and silver damselfly, which resembles a dragonfly, now only needs approval from the full Assembly and Gov. Jim Gibbons' signature before it is the state's official insect.

Three fourth-graders at Beatty Elementary School in Las Vegas testified by teleconference on how they nominated the damselfly as the state insect.

They noted that the male damselfly's colors are the colors of Nevada and that the insect is abundant throughout the state.

Forty-two states have state insects.
