Deer Creek Road on Mount Charleston to have lane restrictions

The Nevada Department of Transportation this weekend will implement lane restrictions on Mount Charleston's state Route 158, also known as Deer Creek Road, to facilitate several projects, agency officials announced Thursday.

Lane restrictions will be in effect from 7 a.m. Saturday to 8 p.m. Sunday. Motorists can expect long delays. A message board will alert motorists to the restrictions.

NDOT will conduct blasting for an excavation project that includes lengthening and adding a new overlook to a trail on Route 158. The agency also will cut into the face of the mountain on the route to create sight lines between oncoming traffic and the Deer Creek picnic parking lot, which is being expanded and widened.

During the restricted period, Route 158 will be closed from the picnic area to the intersection of State Route 156. Both the picnic area and state Route 156 will remain open, and area residents will have access to their homes, NDOT said.

The public will be able to access Mount Charleston via Route 156 (Lee Canyon Road) and Route 157 (Kyle Canyon Road). Residents and the public wanting to go from Lee Canyon to Kyle Canyon, or vice versa, will have to go down to U.S. Highway 95 to get across the mountain.
