Design contract approved for $50 million UNLV building

CARSON CITY – A $50 million academic building for UNLV’s William F. Harrah College of Hotel Administration took an initial step Tuesday with the approval of a $2.8 million contract for architectural services.

The contract with Carpenter Sellers Del Gatto Architects was approved by the state Board of Examiners, including Gov. Brian Sandoval.

Gus Nuñez, manager of the state Public Works Board, said the new building should be ready for students by the fall of 2017. Construction is dependent on funding in the 2015 session of the Legislature, however.

The project has been in the planning stages for several years but was stalled by budget cuts.

The 2013 Legislature agreed to appropriate $3.2 million in state money to the project, along with $1.7 million in other funding, to get it to the construction stage.

The state will pay $30 million; the University of Nevada, Las Vegas will have to come up with $20 million.

The building would include classrooms and other facilities and total about 95,000 square feet.

It would be the first major academic building project at UNLV since 2008.
