Driver dies trying to elude police in Pahrump

A 24-year-old Las Vegas man died early Thursday after his pickup truck crashed in Pahrump while police say he was trying to elude them.

A Las Vegas police officer assisted a Nye County Sheriff's deputy who was following the 2006 Dodge Crew Cab pickup truck about 2:30 a.m. Las Vegas police said the man was driving erratically.

The driver then tried to flee, police said. Officers caught up with the truck as the driver lost control of the vehicle and crashed in a desert area west of the Nye County Fairgrounds. The driver, who was not identified by police, was taken to Pahrump's Desert View Hospital, where he later died.

The collision remains under investigation by the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department and the Nevada Highway Patrol.
