El Cortez Hotel Casino earns spot on historic places register
Two Nevada landmarks, including the El Cortez Hotel Casino in downtown Las Vegas, have earned spots on the National Register of Historic Places.
Joining the El Cortez on the exclusive list is the Washoe County library in downtown Reno, state historic preservation officers say .
Constructed in 1941, the El Cortez remains one of the oldest establishments on Fremont Street and the only one to continue operation under its original name.
While primarily Spanish Colonial Revival in style, it reflects a 1952 remodel when the facade was modernized.
The downtown Reno library was completed in 1966 . Its interior landscaping includes an atrium with a pond and fountain. Mature trees and extensive foliage extend toward the skylights.
