Ely Mayor Hickman takes leave for cancer treatment

The mayor of Ely says he's been diagnosed with cancer and is taking a medical leave of absence for the rest of the year to receive treatment.

Mayor Jon Hickman told The Ely Times he has a cancerous growth in his throat. He says he will undergo seven weeks of radiation and chemotherapy in Albuquerque, N.M., where he plans to stay with his daughter.

Hickman said his doctor told them there is a good chance of recovery. He says he hopes to return to Ely in January and resume his duties as mayor.

City Councilman Shane Bybee will serve as mayor pro tem in the meantime. Hickman said he intends to be in contact with city hall throughout his treatment.
