FALLEN POLICE OFFICER REMEMBERED

Hundreds of law enforcement officers, family and friends showed up at the International Church of Las Vegas this morning to pay their respects to Las Vegas police officer James Manor, killed in a collision on May 7.

Clark County Sheriff Doug Gillespie praised Manor, 28, as a “fine, young officer” and thanked the Las Vegas community for its support since his death while responding to a domestic violence call.

“I stand up at a lot of podiums and give a lot of speeches,” Gillespie said. “But this is one I pray I never have to give.”

“I’ve been asked several times throughout the last week about how a police department and family can manage through events like this, and I told them, and I speak from the bottom of my heart, it’s through the support of the community.”

Rev. Dr. Naida Parson, Senior Pastor at Manor’s New Antioch Christian Fellowship, said Manor “fought the good fight” and “kept his faith.”

“It’ll never be OK that his life was cut short by an accident that a little patience could have prevented,” she said.

“It’ll never be OK to throw down a few beers and drive yourself home. It may be legal but it’ll never be OK.”

Wayne Tanaka, principal of Clark High School when Manor graduated in 1999, said Manor’s “kind of leadership was defined by one word — example.”

Calvin Darling, 45, was arrested on drunken driving charges following Manor’s death. He was released from jail when his blood alcohol content tested under the legal limit, but the charges still stand while the investigation continues.
