CARSON CITY — The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service is proposing to list a ground-hugging plant found only in western Nevada and eastern California as a threatened species.
The federal agency on Thursday said about 2,000 acres in Nevada’s Douglas and Washoe counties and California’s Lassen, Plumas and Sierra counties have been identified as critical habitat for Webber’s ivesia (IVE’-zia).
A perennial forb, the plant is a member of the rose family. It has clusters of leaves that lie nearly flat on the ground and are about 10 inches in diameter. In spring it has clusters of small yellow flowers.
The service said the plant is threatened by development, off-road vehicles, livestock grazing and wildfires.
A final determination on the plant’s listing will be made next year.
