Findlay parents upset about not being told of swine flu case

The Clark County School District was criticized today for not identifying Findlay Middle School as having a student with the swine flu virus.

“They really need to let us know,” said Colleen, a Findlay mother who asked that her last name not be used. “This is authority pulling the wool over our eyes.”

Rob Rosales, a Findlay father of a 12-year-old seventh-grader, was worried his daughter might bring home the virus and infect his 3-month-old baby.

“Maybe the best thing to do would be to close the school down,” Rosales said. “It would be tragic to have a lot of kids come down with the disease.”

Because the swine flu is milder than expected, the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has asked that schools no longer be shut down when any of their students come down with the disease.

Local school officials said they didn’t identify the school because they were respecting the privacy of the 11-year-old sick student, who has been out of school for a week.

District officials said they have not noticed an outbreak of absences or illnesses at the school.

Findlay is in northern Las Vegas the intersection of Commerce Street and Tropical Parkway.
