Fire destroys home, displaces mother, four children

A mother and her four young children narrowly escaped a fire that ravaged their single-story home Tuesday night.

Las Vegas Fire Department dispatchers received calls about a house fire in the 4600 block of Spider Court, near Decatur Boulevard and Lake Mead Boulevard, just before 7 p.m.

The blaze engulfed the attic, and smoke billowed from the vents and eaves of the house as firefighters arrived. Firefighters were able to control the fire in about five minutes, fire officials said.

Investigators determined that the fire started on a couch that was resting against an outside wall of the house and expanded upward into the attic undetected.

The mother said she was unaware that the house was on fire until smoke crept into the house and she began to hear people screaming for them to get out. She and her children, ages 2 to 7, managed to escape the house without any injuries.

Damage was estimated at $125,000.

The American Red Cross was assisting the family after the fire.
