Flight instructor, teen injured in Marana airport plane crash

MARANA, Ariz. -- A plane that had circled back to a southern Arizona airport just after takeoff crashed after missing the runway, causing serious injuries to the two people onboard Saturday, authorities said.

One of the injured was a 16-year-old girl who was taking an introductory flight for possible flying lessons, Capt. Adam Goldberg of the Northwest Fire/Rescue District said. The girl's mother witnessed the crash at Marana Northwest Regional Airport.

The 46-year-old flight instructor who was flying the single-engine Remos airplane suffered life-threatening injuries, Goldberg said.

Goldberg said witnesses saw the plane take off, take a hard right, circle around, miss the runway and land in a field next to the runway. A medical helicopter crew based at the airport witnessed the crash and began helping the instructor and girl immediately.
