Forum set for Assembly District 17 applicants

A forum for applicants seeking the vacant Assembly District 17 seat is planned for Monday evening, the day before Clark County commissioners will pick a new legislator to represent the district.

The public event is scheduled for 6 p.m. at the Clark County Commission Chambers, 500 Grand Central Parkway, Las Vegas.

Audience members can submit questions at the event. The County Commission is expected to pick a candidate for the legislative seat at its 9:15 a.m. Tuesday meeting. The new legislator will represent the district for the rest of the legislative session. The Legislature must adjourn by June 3.

The Clark County Democratic Black Caucus, North Valley Democratic Club, Latino Democratic Caucus and North Las Vegas Dems Club are hosting the event. The moderator is Hugh H. Jackson, co-host of “The Agenda” on KSNV-TV, Channel 3.

Ten people have applied for the job, including one who dropped out and one who missed the deadline.

Fred Young has withdrawn from consideration. In his letter of withdrawal, Young said there are excellent candidates who applied, adding he doesn’t believe he has enough local influence to be appointed. Young was a city councilman in Illinois.

Brandon Casutt, who sent the county his application six minutes after the deadline of 5 p.m. Friday, is still seeking consideration for the job despite applying late.

County officials initially believed he was ineligible based on an outdated address in voter registration records. Casutt has given a change of address form to the Election Department.
