Gibbons names former educator to board of regents

Gov. Jim Gibbons named a longtime Southern Nevada educator and former councilwoman in Boulder City to the state’s Board of Regents on Monday.

Andrea Anderson retired this year after serving as the site manager at the College of Southern Nevada’s Boulder City campus. She ended eight years on Boulder City’s council this past summer, citing a desire to spend more time with her husband, who is also retired.

Anderson will replace Stavros Anthony, who resigned from the board after being elected to the Las Vegas City Council earlier this year. She will represent District 12, which includes most of the rural parts of Clark County and Boulder City.

Anderson, 64, had 26 years experience in higher education when she retired, mostly with CSN. She earned a doctorate in educational leadership from the University of Nevada, Las Vegas.

“I think the Board of Regents is going to be a perfect fit,” Anderson said. She said she has a special interest in career and technical training, which is where she spent much of her career.

Board Chairman James Dean Leavitt said he was “thrilled” to hear of Anderson’s appointment.

He called her “very sharp” and said it was good news that a woman will be joining the board. Before Anderson’s appointment, only one woman — Dorothy Gallagher — was on the Board or Regents.

The Board of Regents is an 13-member elected body that governs the state’s higher education system. Contact reporter Richard Lake at rlake@reviewjournal.com or 702-383-0307.
