MEDIA UPDATE
Molly Sullivan's sports broadcasting journey has gone to another level, from the Mountain West Conference sidelines to the NBA.
The former swimming star from Green Valley High School has moved to Philadelphia to join Comcast SportsNet/NBC Sports Group as the sideline reporter for the 76ers.
But first the network plans to have her work the Philadelphia Eagles' Sept. 30 postgame show.
Her big break came at the end of the 2011-2012 MWC basketball season, her fifth year in the role, when Comcast SportsNet/NBC Sports Group handed her 76ers' sideline duties during the last month of the NBA regular season and the Eastern Conference playoffs.
"That was sort of an audition," said Sullivan, who had some college overtures but decided to stick with Comcast/NBC. ...
Former KLAS-TV, Channel 8 anchor Gary Waddell turned back the clock last weekend at his 50th high school reunion last weekend in Kearney, Neb.
"For one weekend, everybody was 18," said Waddell, who retired Aug. 3 after a 34-year run as a Las Vegas news anchor.
Among the reunited classmates was the man who gave Waddell his first radio job.
Art Ferguson went on to make a name for himself in radio.
He became a legendary Los Angeles disc jockey under the pseudonym of Charlie Tuna.
He served as Casey Kasem's announcer on the 1980s TV show "America's Top 10" and two decades later stepped into Kasem's role for the radio shows "American Top 20" and "American Top 10." ...
Review-Journal sportswriter Steve Carp has lost track of how many Bruce Springsteen shows he's attended.
It's well more than 100, closer to 200, says Carp, who recently added two more: The Boss' stops at Wrigley Field in Chicago and Toronto.
Carp was living in New York City when he started following Springsteen in 1973, "before he was popular. He was like a cult figure on the radio. FM radio was just emerging."
Carp met him once, a chance encounter during the early 1980s at a club in Palo Alto, Calif.
Springsteen had dropped by to support his legendary saxman Clarence Clemons, who was performing.
Carp was in the men's room when he saw a guy who looked like Springsteen.
"I thought, 'It can't be,' and I whispered, 'Bruce?' "
Springsteen put a hand to his mouth, making the universal shhh signal.
Carp downplays the number of Springsteen concerts he's seen.
"I'm a newbie compared to some of his fans. Some have seen him over 1,000 times."
