Higher education official calls proposed cuts staggering

Nevada higher education leaders are testifying to a legislative panel this morning about proposed cuts to the system.

Gov. Jim Gibbons has proposed cutting the system's budget by 36 percent.

Vice Chancellor Dan Klaich said the system cannot even plan for such a large cut. Doing so would mean the elimination of one of the universities or all of the community colleges.

"It's staggering," he said. "There is no easy way to do this. These cuts would change the shape of higher education.

They would change the fabric of higher education. And they would slam the door shut for vast numbers of Nevadans who want to improve their futures."
