Homemade bomb kills man, injures teenager
A 44-year-old man was killed and a 17-year-old was injured when a homemade bomb they were working on went off Saturday night in a desert area of the northeast valley.
The teen, identified as Mario Labrato, a Southern Californian visiting Las Vegas, was arrested and faces charges that include murder, Las Vegas police said.
Police said the two were in a desert area northeast of Valmark Drive and Puebla Street, near Craig Road and Nellis Boulevard.
Lt. Lew Roberts said the two were friends who were trying to make the bomb safe when it accidentally went off.
Police were called at 11:03 p.m. to the corner of San Miguel Avenue and Vornsand Drive, where they found Labrato suffering from wounds to his right hand and arm.
The older man, whose name was not released, was found in the desert area suffering from burns to his face and neck. Both were taken to a hospital, where the 44-year-old died. The teen is expected to recover.
Labrato also faces charges of possession of an explosive or incendiary device and willful wanton disregard with substantial bodily harm or death.
He was booked into the Clark County Detention Center and is being held without bail.
