Horse, burro roundup resumes after suspension for holidays

RENO -- The U.S. Bureau of Land Management has resumed a roundup of wild horses and burros in the Tri-State Calico Complex of Northern Nevada.

The gather started Nov. 19, but the agency suspended its efforts for several weeks during the holidays.

Agency officials said animals have been removed from the western portion of the sprawling region, and equipment has been moved to the eastern side of the complex, south of Denio Junction, where the operation resumed Tuesday.

So far, the BLM says 1,048 wild horses and 10 burros have been gathered. Of those, 186 mares and stallions have been returned to the range, after the mares were given fertility control.

Gathered animals are taken to the BLM's adoption center north of Reno. Horses deemed unadoptable will be sent to long-term pastures.
