If you don't live in one of the nation's more densely populated cities, it can be difficult to imagine how a big city family vacation would work. But just because a city is big and bustling, it doesn't mean it lacks attractions that will leave your children with the sense of wonderment you might expect from a more kid-focused destination.
If seeking out Orlando vacation package deals and heading to Disney World is an annual occurrence for your family and you're trying to mix things up, consider heading to one of the big cities on the East Coast for your next family vacation. Here are some of the things that make Boston, Washington, D.C. and New York great family destinations:
Boston: With plentiful city parks and a historic district that's friendly to walkers, it's easier than you might think to move your family from one place to another during your Boston vacation. Read your children "Make Way For Ducklings" before your trip and then take them to Boston Commons, where they can feed what are said to be the descendents of the classic children's book's subjects. Hopping on the amphibious Boston Duck Tour is a great way to see the city, while keeping your children entertained as the vehicle travels from the streets through the Charles River.
Washington, D.C.: Many Washington, D.C., vacation packages offer family-friendly tours of the nation's capitol and surrounding historic points of interest. One of the great things about a trip to D.C. with the family is that many attractions are free, including viewing the captivating monuments on the National Mall and visits to the National Zoo. A network of dedicated trails also makes the city one of the nation's friendliest to bikers, and rentals are widely available if you're a family of cyclists.
New York: Many adults are drawn to New York for the shopping opportunities, but the stores aimed at kids will really delight the whole family. Build-A-Bear Workshop lets kids custom-design their own teddy bears and FAO Schwarz is perhaps the country's most famous toy store. Central Park offers attractions for the whole family and your children will sure to be thrilled by a trip to the top of the Empire State Building or a ride on the Staten Island Ferry past the Statue of Liberty. Rides on the ferry are free, as are subway rides for children under 44 inches tall.
