Single-car crash claims life of 33-year-old man

A 33-year-old Las Vegas man died after he was involved in a single-car crash Friday night on Lake Mead Boulevard near Marion Drive.

Las Vegas police didn't release the identity of the deceased man.

Police said the 8:37 p.m. crash occurred when the driver of a 2006 Dodge Stratus, headed west on Lake Mead, attempted to pass a slower moving car.

Police said when he completed the pass, he lost control and the car began a clockwise rotation across the center and right westbound lanes.

The Stratus left the road on the north side of Lake Mead and struck a concrete wall. The driver was taken to University Medical Center where he died Saturday morning.

Police said speed appears to be a primary factor in the accident.

SOUTH LOS ANGELES VIOLENCE

Police: Woman kills one son, hurts another

Los Angeles police said a woman shot her two young sons Saturday, killing a 5-year-old boy and critically wounding his 1-year-old brother.

The woman, 26-year-old La' Tonya Dixon, called 911 at about 8:30 a.m. and told a dispatcher that she had killed her children, Los Angeles police officer Norma Eisenman said.

When police arrived at the apartment complex in South Los Angeles, Dixon was standing on a second-floor balcony waving a handgun and telling officers to shoot her, police said.

She shouted "I've wasted my life," neighbors told the Los Angeles Times.

Officers ordered her numerous time to drop the gun, but she refused. At one point she climbed onto the balcony rail and stood on it, as if preparing to jump, police said.

When she eventually put the gun down on the balcony floor, officers quickly tackled and arrested her, police said.

The 5-year-old was declared dead at the scene, Eisenman said. The younger boy was shot multiple times and remained in critical condition Saturday night at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center.

WOMAN CHARGED WITH DUI

Boy critically injured in Nellis Boulevard crash

A 10-month-old boy was critically injured and a 41-year-old Las Vegas woman was arrested on drunken driving charges following a collision shortly after midnight Saturday on Nellis Boulevard near Sahara Avenue.

Claudia Zepeda, 38, of Las Vegas, was driving a 1999 Honda Accord south on Nellis when she was hit in the rear by a 2003 Toyota Sequoia, police said.

Police said Vickie Duran, 41, was driving the Sequoia. After the Accord was rear-ended, it was sent in a southeast direction across the northbound lanes, police said.

Duran fled the scene but was detained by a witness, police said. She was arrested on felony DUI and hit-and-run charges.

The boy, a passenger in Zepeda's car, was taken to University Medical Center with life-threatening injuries. His identity and condition were not released Saturday evening.
