CHEYENNE AND PECOS

Man's burned body found near intersection on mattress

The burned body of a 63-year-old man was found Monday afternoon at the intersection of Cheyenne Avenue and Pecos Road, Las Vegas police said.

The body was found on top of a mattress, which was also heavily burned, and has not yet been identified.

Homicide detectives were called to the scene, but early impressions were that no accelerant was used.

Police spokesman Ted Snodgrass said detectives found a suitcase next to the body, which led them to believe the man was homeless. They also found money on his person, so he had not been robbed.

Detectives suspect the man had a medical condition and fell asleep while smoking a cigarette, Snodgrass said.

EAST VALLEY HOME

22-month-old boy hit, killed by Chevrolet Tahoe in driveway

A 22-month-old boy was struck and killed Sunday evening after he ran behind a car leaving the driveway of an east valley home, Las Vegas police say.

The Clark County coroner's office identified the boy as Ismael Guerrero Jr., of Las Vegas.

According to witnesses, the toddler followed the driver, 22-year-old Manuel Bermudez, outside the home near East Pelham Court and Sacramento Drive, south of Stewart Avenue and east of Lamb Boulevard. As Bermudez backed a 1997 Chevrolet Tahoe from a driveway, the boy walked into the vehicle's path.

The toddler died at the scene. The coroner's office ruled his death accidental.

The fatality remains under investigation.
