FELONY DRUNKEN DRIVING CHARGES FILED

Identity of woman killed in early-morning crash released

The 24-year-old Las Vegas woman who was killed Sunday when her car was hit by a truck driven by a man who ran a stoplight was identified as Angela Nichole Peterson, according to the Clark County coroner's office.

Peterson died of multiple blunt force motor vehicle trauma, said a spokeswoman for the coroner's office. Her death was ruled accidental.

Police said the woman was making a legal left turn onto Rainbow Boulevard from Flamingo Road shortly after 1 a.m. when her Pontiac Sunfire was hit by Kevin Miranda's 2008 Dodge Ram. Peterson was transported to University Medical Center, where she was pronounced dead.

Miranda, 18, was arrested and charged with two felony counts of drunken driving after failing a sobriety test, police said.

CLARK COUNTY

Water rate increases to be considered this morning

People hate to see their utility bills go up, so Clark County commissioners could get an earful this morning when they consider a pair of proposed water rate increases.

Serving in its role as the Las Vegas Valley Water District board, the commission is scheduled to take public comment and then vote on the rate increases, which would take effect Jan. 1.

The meeting is set for 9 a.m. in the commission chambers at the Clark County Government Center downtown.

Taken together, the two rate hikes would mean $3 to $4 extra a month next year and a similar increase in 2011 for most residential customers in the city of Las Vegas and unincorporated areas of the valley.

The first is an increase in the water district's flat monthly service charge, which varies depending on the size of a customer's water meter. The second rate hike is a direct pass-through of an increase approved in September by the Southern Nevada Water Authority, the umbrella agency of the water district.

VICTIM DIED FRIDAY

Motorcyclist who died in crash identified by coroner's office

The 26-year-old man who died Friday when his motorcycle collided with a truck on Craig Road near North Fifth Street was identified as Jeffrey Johnson, according to the Clark County coroner's office.

Johnson's death was ruled accidental. He died from blunt force trauma, a coroner's office spokeswoman said.

The driver of the 2001 Chevrolet pickup, Emmanuel Gordian, 21, fled the scene of the crash but was arrested about three hours later.

He was booked into the North Las Vegas Detention Center on one felony count of reckless driving resulting in death and one count of leaving the scene of an accident resulting in death.

Investigators said Gordian was traveling more than 100 mph east on Craig when the collision occurred.

ATTACK ON ARVILLE STREET

Coroner's office releases ID of man slain in home invasion

The 37-year-old man who was shot and killed Saturday after two men forced entry into his apartment and demanded money was identified as Karriem Shelby, according to the Clark County coroner's office.

Shelby's death was ruled a homicide. He died from multiple gunshot wounds, a coroner's office spokeswoman said.

Police said the attack happened about 11 p.m. at El Parque Apartments, 3355 Arville St., south of Desert Inn Road.

The man and a woman inside the apartment resisted, and one of the suspects shot the man, police said.

The male suspects, described as black, fled on foot, police said.

The woman received a minor injury in the incident.

ALLEGED DRUG DEAL TURNED DEADLY

Authorities identify man killed in CVS parking lot shooting

The man shot and killed on Thanksgiving in what police suspect was a drug deal turned deadly was identified as 19-year-old McClain Kenton Zornes, the Clark County coroner's office said Monday.

The slaying took place at a CVS drugstore parking lot in the northwest valley near Tenaya Way and Craig Road.

Witnesses told Las Vegas police that a man in a beaten-up orange car shot a man in a purple sedan.

The victim, Zornes, then drove his car into a palm tree and the vehicle flipped. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

The coroner's office ruled that Zornes' death was a homicide from a gunshot wound to the chest.

On Friday, police arrested Lionel Collins III, 20, who they allege was the gunman. Collins was booked into the Clark County Detention Center on a charge of murder with a deadly weapon. He is being held without bail.

CHARGES WERE DROPPED

Las Vegas trucker wants Kansas county to return cash

A Las Vegas truck driver who had more than $550,000 confiscated after a traffic stop in Kansas is appealing a judge's decision to allow Shawnee County to keep the money even though charges against him were dropped.

Eduardo Arencibia also has filed a federal lawsuit accusing the Shawnee County Sheriff's Office of violating his civil rights.

Arencibia was driving an empty semitrailer on Nov. 7, 2007, when he was pulled over on Interstate 70 by a Shawnee County deputy. A search of his cab turned up nearly $552,000 in cash, and he was charged with transporting drug proceeds.
