THROWN FROM VEHICLE
Woman killed on I-15 was from Los Angeles
A California woman who died on Interstate 15 near Jean last weekend was identified Tuesday by the Clark County coroner's office as 55-year-old Dora Linares of Los Angeles.
The Nevada Highway Patrol said Linares was thrown from a Toyota 4Runner. She was a passenger in the back seat and was not wearing a seat belt.
The accident occurred about 11 a.m. Saturday. The highway patrol said the 4Runner's right rear tire tread separated, causing the northbound vehicle to slam into a barrier and spin several times.
Although two other people not wearing seat belts were in the back seat with Linares, they were not thrown from the vehicle, the Highway Patrol said.
Linares died at the scene.
The two other back-seat passengers were taken to University Medical Center with nonlife threatening injuries. The female driver and male front-seat passenger were wearing seat belts and were not injured.
THREE POLICE CARS RAMMED
Felon gets seven years for firing gun, chase
A felon who led police on a high-speed chase after firing his weapon at another motorist was sentenced Tuesday to seven years in prison, the U.S. attorney's office said.
Lee Mitchell, 26, pleaded guilty to being a felon in possession of a firearm.
The government said Mitchell and another man were at the Sportsman's Royal Club on Boulder Highway in 2008. When the man left, Mitchell followed and fired shots as the man pulled away in his vehicle.
When officers arrived, Mitchell took off and led them on a chase that reached speeds of 100 mph, the government said. Mitchell rammed three marked police cars before his vehicle broke down and he was arrested.
Mitchell's prior convictions were for malicious mischief and assault with a deadly weapon.
SISTER ALERTED AUTHORITIES
Woman gets 10 years for receiving child porn
A Las Vegas woman caught with child pornography images on her computer was sentenced Tuesday to 10 years in federal prison and a lifetime of supervised release.
Susan Dean, 43, pleaded guilty to one count of receipt of child pornography in April. Dean's sister alerted authorities after she saw pornographic images on Dean's computer and grew concerned about her sister's teenage sons.
Authorities discovered 200 images of child pornography and 80 child pornography videos, the U.S. attorney's office said. The pictures and videos showed young children and bondage.
SECOND CASE CONFIRMED
Middle school closes because of swine flu
The Boys & Girls Club of Carson Valley has closed the Pau-Wa-Lu Middle School in Gardnerville after a second case of swine flu was confirmed.
Diane McCoy, director of operations for the Boys & Girls Club of Western Nevada, said Monday the school will be closed for a week at the least.
McCoy says if there are no new cases, the school will reopen on Monday. Another confirmed case could mean closing for the rest of the summer.
The first swine flu case in a club member was confirmed on July 22. That club member also had viral spinal meningitis, which was not contagious. The whole facility was disinfected.
News of the second case of swine flu came on Friday.
