CAR HITS WALL

Idaho man killed in U.S. 95 crash identified

The man who died Tuesday night after his car crashed into the sound wall on U.S. Highway 95 has been identified as 63-year-old Douglas Scott Croasdaly of Coeur d'Alene, Idaho.

Croasdaly was driving a Lincoln Continental northbound when, for reasons unknown, the car drifted to the right side of the road just past Charleston Boulevard.

The car slammed into a small barrier wall and into the sound wall on the side of the highway.

The car then spun back into the northbound lanes after knocking down a light pole, Nevada Highway Patrol officials said.

Croasdaly was not wearing a seat belt. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

NEW MEXICO INCIDENT

Bodies of hiker, pilot found at crash site

The bodies of a state police helicopter pilot and the stranded hiker he was rescuing were found on a steep New Mexico mountainside near the chopper's wreckage a day after the only survivor hiked to safety.

Rescue teams on Thursday located the bodies of Sgt. Andy Tingwall, the pilot, and Megumi Yamamoto, a University of New Mexico physics graduate student from Tokyo.

Tingwall did a tremendous job piloting the craft in Tuesday's squall during the rescue mission, State Police Chief Faron Segotta said.

But as the chopper lifted off after rescuing the hiker, the tail rotor is thought to have clipped a tree, causing the chopper to crash and tumble down the slope, he said.

Cox spent Tuesday night in the fuselage of the helicopter and managed to walk about a mile with a fractured ankle and back and leg injuries, before he encountered rescuers on Wednesday.
