STRIP PROJECT
Two workers fall at CityCenter site
Two workers fell 22 feet from a scissor lift at the Project CityCenter on the Strip Tuesday afternoon, the latest on-site accident to befall crews of the $9 billion project.
Clark County firefighters were called to the site at about 2:15 p.m. Tuesday after the men fell.
They tumbled sideways when the scissor lift they were working on tipped, said Scott Allison, department spokesman.
Six workers have died in the past 17 months and work has been stalled for other construction mishaps on the CityCenter project.
The men, who have not been identified, were taken to University Medical Center after both complained of back pain. Allison said their injuries were not life threatening.
It is unclear what caused the scissor lift to tip.
The Nevada Occupational Safety and Health Administration will conduct the investigation and safety review, Allison said.
TRUCK OVERTURNS
Teenager killed in I-15 crash is identified
An 18-year-old man died on Thursday when his pickup overturned on Interstate 15 three miles north of the Las Vegas Motor Speedway.
Daniel James Carbonell of Las Vegas was driving a 2006 Dodge Ram pickup in the left lane on the highway about 4:10 p.m. when the vehicle drifted into the right lane, Nevada Highway Patrol officials said.
Carbonell then steered sharply to the left, sending the truck into the dirt center median, where it overturned.
He was pronounced dead at the scene.
SUV INCIDENT
Name of Pahrump man killed in crash released
A Pahrump man died last week when he lost control of the sport utility vehicle he was driving on state Route 160 in Nye County.
Bruce Albert Kraemer, 39, was driving north on the highway in a maroon Suzuki on July 9 when the vehicle drifted across the southbound lane and into the gravel shoulder at 6:07 p.m.
He then steered sharply to the right, causing the Suzuki to overturn, Nevada Highway Patrol officials said.
Kraemer, who wasn't wearing a seat belt, was thrown from the vehicle. He died at the scene.
HEARING DATE SET
Suspects in robbery case get new lawyers
Two men accused of abducting, beating and robbing NFL player Javon Walker got new lawyers and another court date Tuesday from a judge who told them he'll consider requests to reduce bail later this month.
Justice of the Peace Tony Abbatangelo canceled a hearing today for Arfat Abdo Fadel, 30, combined the cases and scheduled a July 29 evidence and bail hearing for both men on felony kidnapping, robbery and conspiracy charges.
Neither Fadel nor Deshawn Lamont Thomas, 40, has entered a plea.
Police allege Thomas and Fadel followed Walker while he spent a night club-hopping and gambling, and talked the Oakland Raiders wide receiver into willingly getting into their vehicle just before 6 a.m. June 16 at the Bellagio.
Walker was found more than an hour later, robbed and unconscious.
Lawyers Betsy Allen, for Thomas, and Gabriel Grasso were appointed after Robert Lucherini, Thomas' lawyer in the pandering case, withdrew. The county public defender's office said it could not represent either man because of conflicts.
HOMELESS MEN KILLED
Women get life in L.A. insurance killings
Two elderly women sat stony faced as a Los Angeles judge denounced their greed Tuesday and sentenced them to life in prison for murdering two indigent men to collect insurance policies.
Superior Court Judge David Wesley handed down two life terms each without possibility of parole, to Helen Golay, 77, and Olga Rutterschmidt, 75.
The women were convicted of befriending homeless men, taking out policies, and then killing them in murders staged to look like hit-and-run accidents.
Prosecutors say the women collected $2.8 million before the scheme was uncovered.
