Police arrest driver after pedestrian killed

Las Vegas police arrested a man suspected of driving under the influence Sunday and hitting a pedestrian and causing his death.

Jose Silva, 34, was booked at the Clark County Detention Center on a felony driving under the influence charge, police said.

Silva was driving northbound on Lamb Boulevard near Colorado Avenue just before 6 a.m. when he veered onto the sidewalk and struck a 70-year-old pedestrian, police said.

The pedestrian died at Sunrise Hospital and Medical Center, according to The Associated Press.

Police said Silva, who was driving a Ford Taurus, continued driving until witnesses forced him to stop.

NO ONE INJURED

Church roof destroyed in electrical blaze

A Saturday night electrical fire that began in the attic of Antioch Church destroyed the roof and caused $275,000 in damage, officials with the Las Vegas Fire Department said.

The blaze began shortly before 8 p.m. at the church, located at 3825 Melody Lane, near Vegas and Rancho drives.

Fire Department officials said no one was injured. The blaze caused moderate damage in the worship area of the church.

Car on sidewalk injures eight Strip pedestrians

An accident early Sunday sent eight pedestrians on the Strip to the hospital, Las Vegas police said.

Police said a car hit at least 10 people about 2:30 a.m. Sunday after veering onto the sidewalk north of the MGM Grand on Las Vegas Boulevard South near Tropicana Avenue.

Eight of the people who were hit were taken to a hospital for minor injuries, police said.

Police said the driver fled the scene. The car later was found with a flat tire.

CRASH INVESTIGATED

Teenage girl killed in collision on river

A 15-year-old girl was killed after her personal watercraft collided with another on the Colorado River near Blythe, Calif., authorities said Sunday.

Lauren Taguchi of Los Angeles collided with another watercraft piloted by Ricky Ledford of Las Vegas about 11:30 a.m. Saturday near McIntyre Park, said Riverside County sheriff's Sgt. Ned Hyduke.

Ledford helped Taguchi to shore, but she was unresponsive when authorities arrived.

Taguchi was declared dead at Palo Verde Hospital.

Both vessels were towed and stored.

The crash was under investigation.
