IPhone 4 hits marketplace … and already we see problems

Many customers finally got their hands the much-touted Apple iPhone 4 on Thursday. But many of them say they need to keep their hands off the new gadgets to make phone calls.

The tech review site Gizmodo.com, which got its hands on an iPhone 4 earlier than Apple planned, is soliciting videos from users showing the problem. The videos show the iPhone 4 losing its connection to the AT&T 3G network when the phone is held in a hand. It seems holding the device in the left hand poses a greater risk of losing the signal than holding it in the right hand. Phones lying on a table show five "bars" — a full-strength signal. But as the iPhones are picked up the bars steadily decline until none remain and reception is lost.

Some videos show users still able to place calls in spite of the apparent loss of signal; others show the device losing its phone function.

Other users are reporting mysterious yellow blotches on the iPhone 4 display, nicknamed "Retina."

I think I'll wait a while before updating to this new iPhone. At least until Apple can resolve these two issues.
