Lake Tahoe water taxi service to kick off this summer
INCLINE VILLAGE -- A pilot ferry program is scheduled to begin shuttling passengers around Lake Tahoe's north shore this summer in what backers hope is a precursor to a trans-Tahoe boat service.
In addition to reducing traffic congestion and auto emissions that pollute the lake, supporters say such a water taxi service could help bolster the region's bid for the 2022 Winter Olympics.
The pilot program, approved by the Tahoe Transportation District board last week, calls for one or two 20-passenger boats running about seven miles between Tahoe City and Kings Beach, Calif. It is expected to start by June 30.
Board member Nancy McDermid said water shuttles have been in service in many parts of the world for decades. She said it was time for Lake Tahoe to move into the 21st century.
