Las Vegas man pleads guilty in 2008 stabbing death

A 29-year-old Las Vegas man pleaded guilty to second-degree murder with use of a deadly weapon just before his trial was to begin Monday.

Authorities said Christian O. Paredes was responsible for the slaying of 46-year-old Dennis Borero on Dec. 31, 2008.

As part of a plea deal, prosecutors will recommend a 15- to 40-year prison term for Paredes at a sentencing hearing scheduled for November before District Judge David Wall.

Paredes confessed to investigators that he was high on methamphetamine when he stabbed Borero multiple times in the neck at a home near Lamb Boulevard and Boulder Highway, according to his arrest report.

Paredes said that Borero had threatened him and his 2-year-old daughter because Paredes had stolen a knife, the report stated.

Paredes admitted to police that, at the time, neither he nor Borero knew where the child lived.

Prosecutor Tina Sedlock said witnesses later told authorities that Borero never threatened Paredes.

Borero was stabbed at least seven times, Sedlock said.

Authorities recovered the weapon used in the slaying and found DNA from both Borero and Paredes on the black-handled folding knife, Sedlock said.

Paredes, who told detectives he had injured himself during the stabbing, had hidden the knife from police in a container of anti-freeze, according to his arrest report.

Several witnesses saw Paredes leaving the home with blood on his hands. Paredes told people at the home that "nobody saw nothing," the report said.

Borero, nicknamed "Rasta Man," worked as a carpet cleaner and was a married father of three children, according to his obituary.

Paredes' attorney could not be reached for comment late Monday.
