LV lawyer to run for attorney general

Jacob Hafter, a Las Vegas attorney whose clients are suing two local hospitals for shoddy care, will run for attorney general of Nevada.

Hafter, a Republican, said Monday he will seek the seat held by Democrat Catherine Cortez Masto.

Hafter represents Roshunda Abney, 25, and her fiance, Raffinee Dewberry, in a case against University Medical Center and Valley Hospital Medical Center.

The couple waited six hours in UMC's emergency room Nov. 30, seeking treatment for Abney's abdominal pain. The couple also contends they unsuccessfully sought treatment at Valley. Valley officials deny that personnel were unhelpful.

Abney went home and gave breech birth to a baby girl, who died. Abney said she did not know she was pregnant.

A state investigation confirmed the couple's allegations about what happened at UMC.

On his campaign Web site, Hafter criticizes health care in Nevada and says the attorney general should step in to diversify health insurance availability.
