Man critically wounded in standoff with Henderson police

Henderson police fired at a robbery suspect after a standoff on Boulder Highway on Saturday afternoon.

But the 26-year-old man was taken to Sunrise Hospital and Medical Center with trauma from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound, said Henderson police spokesman Keith Paul.

His condition is unknown.

The man and a 23-year-old woman were stopped by police after employees at a nearby Check and Go shop reported being robbed. Officers in the area located the suspects in a red vehicle around the corner from the store, Paul said.

Police ordered the two out of the vehicle and the woman complied. However, the man did not. Officers returned fire after hearing a gunshot inside of the car, he said.

Paul said none of the shots fired by officers hit the man. How many times they fired wasn't immediately known Saturday.

The woman, who was driving the car, was still being questioned Saturday evening.

The two officers who fired their weapons were placed on routine administrative leave pending the outcome of the investigation.
