Man held in attack on girl

A 26-year-old Las Vegas man was arrested on charges he broke into a Charleston Boulevard apartment near Buffalo Drive and attempted to sexually assault a 7-year-old girl.

Faustino Martin-Mendoza was booked into the Clark County Detention Center on charges of burglary with use of a deadly weapon, lewdness with a child under the age of 14 and attempted sexual assault of a minor under the age of 14.

The incident happened about 2 a.m. April 26, when Martin-Mendoza was found in the girl's bedroom by her mother, Las Vegas police said.

According to the arrest report, the girl's mother found a man standing over the girl's bed. She said he held a metal object in his hand. She also told police that her daughter's shorts had been cut. Once discovered, the man fled the apartment, the report said.

Police used a sketch artist to discover Martin-Mendoza's identity, and he was picked out of a photo lineup, it said.

Martin-Mendoza lived near Smoke Ranch and Jones Boulevard. Investigators are asking for the public's help in determining whether there are any other incidents that he might have been involved in.

Anyone with information is asked to call the sexual assault section at 828-3421 or Crime Stoppers at 385-5555.
