Man killed by train outside of Las Vegas identified

A man who died after being struck by a train in a rural area northeast of Las Vegas early Wednesday has been identified by the Clark County coroner’s office.

Nathan Harvey, 21, was trespassing around the railway tracks and was struck by a freight train headed east from Los Angeles to Illinois just after 6 a.m., according to a Union Pacific railroad spokesman.

Freight trains typically take more than a mile to stop, making it difficult to avoid a collision, according to Union Pacific.

The train crew was relieved from duty and placed into a counseling program.
