May all those laid off by the Sun land on their feet

Believe me, I take no schadenfreude in layoffs at the competing Las Vegas Sun. Been there, done that — 20 years ago I was there for the last edition of the Miami News, which was the afternoon half of a joint operating agreement with the Miami Herald.

The News had a mascot of sorts, a cartoon ’gator on the front page who illustrated the weather forecast. His name was Twilby. Get it?

The job forecast then seemed bleak. I've kept in touch with several Newsies over the years, and most landed on their feet, many still work as journalists.

It may not be the same today. Several of those the Sun laid off Tuesday had been loyal and dedicated staffers for decades, as even editor Brian Greenspun explains today.

I wish them the best. The job forecast is bleak.

Now, if the people at the Sun would just stop telling people who apply for jobs at the Review-Journal — as they have been doing for years — that the Sun is about to buy the R-J.
