Miller seeks special election cost analysis

CARSON CITY -- Secretary of State Ross Miller asked the 17 county registrars of voters and clerks Thursday to analyze the cost of conducting the special congressional election late this summer by mail ballot only.

Miller said several clerks asked about using a mail election after the passage and signing of Assembly Bill 82, which allows them, with the secretary of state's approval, to establish mail precincts. The law goes into effect July 1.

The secretary of state earlier estimated the cost of a formal election at $1.3 million.

The election is necessary because Gov. Brian Sandoval appointed 2nd Congressional District Rep. Dean Heller to succeed John Ensign after he resigned from the U.S. Senate.

Miller is allowing all candidates to run, but the state Supreme Court will conduct a June 28 hearing and decide whether only candidates selected by party central committees can run in the election, tentatively set for Sept. 13.

Miller wants clerks and registrars to give him information on mail ballot costs and possible problems with a mail election by June 24.
