Missouri hiker falls to death in No. Arizona

PAGE, Ariz. — A Missouri man was killed at Glen Canyon National Recreation Area in northern Arizona after falling into Lake Powell.

The National Park Service says a dispatcher received a call Saturday that a hiker had fallen from a cliff into the water at the lake's Escalante arm.

Park rangers found the man dead in the Escalante River some two miles upstream from the mouth of Explorer Canyon.

He was identified as 49-year-old Robert Hunt of St. Peters, Mo.

Officials say he fell while trying to cross a slope of loose rock at the edge of a cliff while hiking with a friend.

They say Hunt landed in shallow water and mud 70 feet below and suffered a traumatic head injury.
