Mother jailed after infant son brought to Reno hospital
RENO -- A 26-year-old Reno woman has been jailed on suspicion of child neglect after hospital officials told police her 5-month-old son was nearly starved.
But family members are defending the woman, saying the baby suffers from a medical condition.
Washoe County Sheriff's Deputy Armando Avina said Shauna Malo was booked into the county jail on Monday. Detectives also are looking for her husband, Myles Malo, 32.
Avina said a relative taking care of the baby took him to Renown Regional Medical Center on Monday. He said Shauna Malo arrived at the hospital while deputies were there and provided them with inconsistent information about the baby's condition, which Avina said was "extremely malnourished."
Malo's mother, Shannon Shane, told the Reno Gazette-Journal the baby has been struggling with liver and gallbladder problems.
