2 women injured in building collapse in Chicago

CHICAGO — Two women and a dog have been rescued after a building collapsed on Chicago’s South Side, and authorities are conducting a search of the rubble even though they don’t believe anyone else was inside.

Chicago Fire Department spokesman Larry Langford says the collapse of the modern three-story building Sunday evening in the Washington Park neighborhood “pancaked all floors toward the basement.” He says the cause is unknown, but authorities are working with the utility companies to make sure there isn’t a problem with the gas line.

Langford calls the operation a “search and rescue” but says interviews with friends and neighbors suggest there aren’t other victims.

He says an elderly woman was talking when taken to the hospital in serious to critical condition. A younger woman was rescued earlier.
