Big bundle of whale arrives at Georgia Aquarium — VIDEO

A rare beluga whale calf was born on Mother’s Day at the Georgia Aquarium in Atlanta.

The whale’s mother, Maris, gave birth to the female at 1:25 a.m. on May 10. The newborn weighed 126 1/2 pounds and was 59 inches in length.

Beluga calf births in captivity are rare. Maris’ last calf was born in 2012 and died in less than a week.

Beluga calves are usually dark gray or blueish gray and darken at one month. It can take up to eight years for the whale to turn white.

According to the Georgia Aquarium blog, the staff saw the fetal calf for the first time via ultrasound on Mother’s Day in 2014.
