Fatal northwestern Arizona accident blamed on excessive speed

Excessive speed is suspected in a fatal traffic accident investigation in Lake Havasu City, Ariz., Tuesday morning.

Police Sgt. Kirk Cesena said the two-vehicle collision at the intersection of Palo Verde Boulevard South and Acoma Boulevard North occurred at 5:54 a.m.

Cesena said a 2008 Audi passenger vehicle driven by Nicholas Hasson, 22, of Lake Havasu, was traveling west on Palo Verde when it T-boned the passenger-side door of a 2012 Chevrolet Colorado pickup that was traveling north on Acoma. The driver of the pickup, Joseph Morgan, 62, of Lake Havasu, was thrown from the vehicle and declared dead at the scene.

"Hasson was traveling at a high rate of speed and failed to stop at the red light at the intersection," Cesena said.

Hasson was transported to a local hospital for treatment of moderate injuries. Charges are pending.
