New Mexico man accused of trying to set his mom on fire

LAS CRUCES, N.M. — Dona Ana County authorities say a man is accused of dousing his wheelchair-bound mother with kerosene and trying to set her on fire.

County sheriff’s officials say 27-year-old Johnny Jimenez is jailed without bond on suspicion of one felony count of attempted aggravated battery against a household member with a deadly weapon.

The woman says her son got mad after she asked him for help cook dinner to celebrate her 63rd birthday Monday.

She says her son slammed her head into the washing machine, causing her to fall out of her wheelchair.

He then allegedly poured kerosene on her and unsuccessfully tried to ignite the fluid with a lighter.

The woman says her son took her cellphone, leaving her incapacitated for several hours until her daughter arrived and called 911.
