Wildfire near Interstate 15 in Southern California now 25 percent contained

DEVORE, California — A slow-moving wildfire burning in the San Bernardino National Forest near the site of a major wildfire last month is 25 percent contained.

The U.S. Forest Service says the 20-acre fire broke out around 10 p.m. Saturday near Interstate 15 in Devore.

The fire led officials to close the interstate for a short time before reopening most lanes. The interstate is a major route for travelers and truckers between Southern California and Las Vegas.

In mid-August, a wildfire in the area burned with a ferocity never seen before by veteran California firefighters.

The blaze raced up and down canyons, instantly engulfing homes and forcing thousands to flee. It was contained at 57 square miles after seven days. Five years of drought have turned the state’s wildlands into a tinder box.
