Nevada gets $15 million in EPA grants for safe-drinking water

RENO — The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency has awarded $15 million in grants to Nevada to help provide low-cost loans for improvements to drinking water and wastewater treatment facilities.

Jared Blumenfeld, EPA’s regional administrator in San Francisco, announced Friday the grants totaling $6.5 million to the Nevada Division of Environmental Protection’s Clean Water Revolving Fund and $8.5 million to its Drinking Water Revolving Fund.

Blumenfeld said the federal agency has provided more than $320 million for Nevada water projects since 1989.

The state has used the loans in the past to help finance new infrastructure to decrease arsenic levels in water Tonopah, and to improve an advanced wastewater treatment plant in Clark County to reduce the amount of bacteria and chemicals entering Lake Mead.
