Nevada panel advances $1.4 million to fight Yucca Mountain

CARSON CITY — A state panel on Tuesday approved nearly $1.4 million to continue Nevada’s fight against Yucca Mountain despite the nuclear waste repository project being described by one official as “the walking dead.”

The Board of Examiners, including Gov. Brian Sandoval and Secretary of State Ross Miller, approved the request for funding submitted by the attorney general’s office and the state Agency for Nuclear Projects.

The requests will go to the Legislature’s Interim Finance Committee.

Sandoval said it is not the time for Nevada to take its “eye off the ball” despite the bleak prospects for building a repository at the site.

Bob Halstead, executive director of the Agency for Nuclear Projects, said the funding might be needed because of a federal court ruling requiring a licensing proceeding for Yucca Mountain to continue under the jurisdiction of the Nuclear Regulatory Commission.
