Nike self-lacing shoes set for 2015, designer hints

In the 1989 blockbuster “Back To The Future Part II,” which is set in 2015, Marty McFly, played by actor Michael J. Fox, throws on a pair of Nike High Top shoes that instantly self-lace to his feet.
And those self-lacing high tops might be a reality by 2015, according to a statement last week by Nike designer Tinker Hatfield.
Exciting, right?
According to an article on Sole Collector, Hatfield hinted about a 2015 release during an appearance in New Orleans at the Jordan Brand’s Flight Lab last Friday.
When asked whether there was any possibility of the self-lacing shoes arriving in 2015, Hatfield replied, “Are we gonna see power laces in 2015? To that, I say yes!”
However, with no confirmation from the company, we’ll just have to wait and see. But this isn’t the first time Nike has given us hope for these incredible McFly replicas.
In 2009, Nike filed for a patent for “an article of footwear with an automatic lacing system,” and 2011 saw the footwear company release their Nike Air Mag.
The Nike Air Mag was released as a limited-edition shoe, and as impressive and futuristic as they looked, they didn’t have the automatic lacing. After their release, Nike teamed up with the Michael J. Fox Foundation and auctioned off 1,500 pairs on eBay.
